On April 6, Wharton's mailing list service will move from a Wharton-hosted solution to a Penn-hosted service, allowing Wharton to reduce duplication of effort and cut costs.
A group of early adopters has been identified and is working with us to help refine our directions and processes. This group of list owners will have their lists migrated early, on March 9. A big Thank You to this group!

What's Needed from Me as an Early Adopter?
Please notify the teams and individuals who regularly write to your mailing lists so they are aware that, after the migration, the way they use the mailing list will change slightly:
- There will be a delay in delivery the first time they send to the newly migrated list
- The "From address" of the list will look a bit different (wha-<listname>@lists.isc.upenn.edu)
Otherwise, please use your mailing list as normal and provide any feedback to apps-support@wharton.upenn.edu regarding the self-confirm and self-moderation process. If our instructions need clarification, we want to do so before rolling this change out to the wider Wharton Community.
Please keep this announcement link handy, as we will post updates to timelines and other important information here.
What's Changing
Moderation and Self-Confirmation
-
While you will continue to email your list as normal, ie. <listname>@wharton.upenn.edu , when self-confirming or moderating, you will no longer go through the Mailinglist application. Instead, you will receive an email prompt for a confirmation from ISC’s listserv. Reply to that prompt with OK in your message and your email will be released for distribution.

Other Changes
-
Postings will appear to come from sender on behalf of wha-<listname>@lists.isc.upenn.edu
-
Penn's software that runs the mailing lists includes a feature that delays delivery of email the first time a subscriber sends to a list. Once migrated, your list will be considered a new list by Penn's listserv, so the first time any of your owners/editors/moderators/subscribers send to the list, there will be a delay of up to 12 minutes. Subsequent submissions will process normally.
What's Not Changing
-
You can still contact a mailing list as you normally do.
-
Users will "reply-all" as normal, which will send to <listname>@wharton.upenn.edu
-
Currently, Wharton mailing list management is done via the Mailinglist app. Penn's Listserv lists are managed through Penn's ISC listserv interface. For Wharton mailing lists, we do not recommend using Penn's listserv interface as your list will no longer be in sync with Mailinglist app. If you edit your Wharton mailing list using the ISC interface, Wharton Computing will no longer be able to support your list.
