Creating a File Submissions Folder in Dropbox

If you need students to submit files that are too large to send via email, you may create a Dropbox folder where students can upload files.

Before You Start

You will need the following before you can complete this task:

Files that students upload will not be visible to other students. You may follow the instructions below or on Dropbox’s documentation for Creating a file request.

Creating a Dropbox file request folder

1. Login to Dropbox at www.dropbox.com with your PennKey@wharton.upenn.edu email address, which should prompt you to log in with PennKey authentication.

2. Select “File Requests” in the left side menu.

3. Select “Request File.”

4. Add a title. This will be visible to students.
Recommended: Please include course number, section, instructor name, assignment name (CW1010-200, Prof. Quaker, final exam).

Optional: You can optionally include the assignment instructions in the description, then add a password, deadline, and/or allow for late uploads if desired (If you add a password, please be sure to share it with your students).

Create new request

5. Click “Create” when finished as shown above.

6. Copy the link, click “Done.”
Share File request

7. Share the link with your students. You can access your class email addresses through Instruction Center or from the class email listserv.

Note: Your students’ names will be appended to the filenames. You will receive automatic email notifications (from no-reply@dropbox.com) when files are uploaded to this folder, and these automated messages may appear in your spam or junk email folder should you need to find them.

Adding additional instructors or TAs

You may wish to give co-instructors or TAs access to the folder so they can see student submissions.

From your Dropbox File request screen:

1. Select “All files.”

2. Select “Share.”
Note: You will only see the option to share when your cursor is in line with the file request title.

Share3. Add the additional instructor or TA’s email address.

4. Click “Share.”

Share Folder5. Adjust permissions if needed.

6. Click “Done.”

Note: Dropbox will send an invitation to the email address, and added users will be able to access the folder through the link provided. If you would like to remove access from the added users, you can follow the steps through step 5 and select “remove.”
